Wealth of the spirit - you have to love and understand it

The wealth of a spiritual person is extremely subtle, almost imperceptible, but if they become conscious of that wealth, heaven and earth are theirs. Why is it so difficult to understand this? Someone will say, ‘That is nothing new. I know that I cannot count on my material possessions, that they will not last. I know that they do not really belong to me and that I am going to have to give them up sooner or later, because I cannot take them with me to the next world. But even though I know all that, I still need to lead a materialistic life, it pleases me.’ Yes, unfortunately this is often how it is: even when the intellect understands the advantages of one way, if the heart desires something else, what does the will do? It follows the desires of the heart; it does whatever pleases the heart. In order to live the rich, immense life of the spirit, you have to love it. It is not enough to understand it.
