Purity - the foundation of the spiritual life, which bears the weight of the edifice

Everybody knows how inconvenient blocked pipes, dirty windows or smeared eyeglasses can be. Very few, however, realize that they are harbouring these same inconveniences within themselves, in the form of thoughts, feelings and desires that are like stains, dust and trash, which block up their spiritual channels and prevent divine light from reaching and entering them. You can build nothing solid or durable in the spiritual life unless you begin by purifying yourself. Why do you suppose that all religions attach so much importance to purity? Simply for its own sake, and nothing beyond that? No, they insist on purity because it is the foundation of all spiritual life, and the function of a foundation is to bear the weight of the whole edifice. Purity is the prerequisite that must be met before we can begin to learn and create in the spiritual world.*
