Renouncement - abstaining from baser pleasures in order to fuel the spirit

In order to keep the sacred inner fire alight within you, you must feed it pieces of your lower nature every day. Yes, for it is the lower nature, the personality, that is predestined to feed the fire of the spirit. Stop wondering what your lower nature is for and how to get rid of it; without it, not only would survival on earth be impossible, but you would have nothing with which to feed your spirit. Know that there is a magical law according to which results on the divine plane can be obtained only if you sacrifice something of your personality. And if you go and find an Initiate, a magus or a great Master to ask him to cure you, a member of your family or a friend, for example, or to ensure the success of some enterprise, he will tell you that the only possible way to do so is to renounce certain weaknesses and harmful habits. By abstaining from baser pleasures, we release an energy that fuels our ability to realize all the good we desire, both for ourselves and for others.*
