Inner life - a mirror image of what goes on in society

What happens within us is a mirror image of what goes on in society: you can witness the same struggles, the same revolutions, and the same reversals of fortune. Many kings have been dethroned because they were unfit for their high position. They thought that they could get away with unjust and cruel behaviour, but all the while their subjects were secretly plotting their downfall, until one day they were replaced. Everyone knows this, but how many realize that this is also what happens in our inner life? The king within us, that is to say man himself, allows himself to become lazy or debauched, and some time later, hostile forces seize hold of him, put him in prison, and rule in his place. So, it is up to us to work every day to maintain our position at the head of our own kingdom.*
