Happiness - it is a state of consciousness

Why is it so difficult to find happiness? Because you wait for it to come to you. Observe yourself and you will see that this is so: you are waiting to meet your true love, waiting for success, fortune and fame, and when they fail to appear you are unhappy. Some people even consult clairvoyants or astrologers who tell them, ‘Yes, yes, love and success will come… in six months, or next year, or when such-and-such a transit or planetary conjunction occurs.’ Hearing this, they are reassured and continue to wait with renewed hope. Well no, happiness is not something that comes—or fails to come—from outside. Happiness is a state of consciousness that depends on a correct understanding of things. It is no good imagining that we are on earth to enjoy a life of ease, pleasure and abundance. We are on earth in order to learn and perfect ourselves. And how can we improve if we are not faced with new problems to resolve every day? Let this be perfectly clear: the earth is a school and, as in all schools, only those who learn and make progress can be happy.*
