Self-knowledge - the Master counts on life to teach us to know ourselves

Most human beings are not very keen to know themselves in order to improve. Lucidity does not interest them; they prefer to deceive themselves and cling to their illusions. They have already formed such a high opinion of themselves that even their spiritual master sometimes prefers not to tell them the truth, for he knows what their reaction will be in advance. They will never say to him, ‘You are right.’ Instead, they will immediately protest, ‘No, no, you are quite wrong. I have none of the weaknesses you say I have!’ In their opinion, it is their master who is mistaken; they themselves are impeccable and infallible! What can a master do with people like that? He will not insist; he knows that life will eventually give them the lessons they need and show them the truth about themselves.
