A river descends from the mountains clear, pure and transparent. On its way down, it passes through regions inhabited by human beings, who throw all their waste into its waters. But the river says, ‘It is with great joy that I flow down through the valleys to quench the thirst of humans and animals, to water the fields and gardens. I am not afraid to be dirtied, because the sun will purify me. It will heat me and I shall rise to the top of the mountain again.’ Like a river, those who come into the world to help human beings never complain about the suffering they are forced to endure at their hands. Despite the disappointments and ingratitude they encounter, they never abandon their ideal. They know that even if they are persecuted, slandered and defamed, they will always be purified and illuminated again by the rays of the spiritual sun.*
