Physical beauty - work inwardly to develop the qualities of the spirit

You must not reproach human beings—especially women—for wanting to be physically beautiful; it is the intelligence of nature that spurs this desire. However, in seeking beauty, you must not be content to use only external means, but work inwardly to develop the qualities of the spirit. You have surely noticed how people who may not be beautiful can be suddenly transfigured when they are seized by a wonderful emotion. This is because the movements of the inner life influence our muscles and nerves. The faces of those who frequently experience a spiritual state are gradually transformed. Whereas, although a woman may take great care of her beauty, if she is motivated by the desire to supplant a rival or steal her friend’s husband, she will actually become increasingly ugly. The destructive effect of her possessiveness, jealousy and hatred will be far stronger than all her beauty products. While trying to build something with one hand, she is demolishing it with the other.
