Master, spiritual - conditions in which a meeting with him can be of benefit

Consider someone who decides to bring order and discipline to their life. They think they need a Master and say to themselves, ‘I want to meet a great Master, the greatest Master. Only then will I agree to embrace spiritual life.’ And they go off to India or elsewhere in search of this exceptional Master. I do not wish to prevent anyone from seeking the greatest Master, but, all the same, there are certain things this ignorant, pretentious person ought to know. If they have not already worked to gain an inner understanding of what a spiritual Master is, to know how to look upon him and how to appreciate him and apply what he is teaching, it is better that they do not meet a great Master. Why? Because they will only succeed in coming up against him; they will be caught in all sorts of contradictions and will remain as weak and ignorant as they were before. So do not concern yourself with measuring a Master’s greatness, but only with how you will understand his teaching.
