Living - the higher way or the animal way

Who are the people all of humanity remembers with gratitude, those whom they praise the most? Those who have surpassed themselves, or those who have spent their lives in a selfish pursuit of enjoyment and pleasure? However much love and understanding we have for the human race, it cannot be denied that there exists a hierarchy among them, and that some have remained close to the level of animals, while others have reached great heights. These exceptional beings distinguished themselves from the others by the beauty and intelligence of their lives, and especially their service to others; they would not have been given this place of honour if they had done nothing good for the collectivity. Well, it is these magnificent beings, these benefactors of humanity, with their nobility, their integrity, and their disinterestedness, whom we must follow and take as our models! When we study all these people who have won a place in history because of their genius, their high moral standing or their strength of character, we have to admit that there is a higher way of living, thinking and evolving, and another way, which makes humans revert to being animals.
