Illusions - may be momentarily beneficial

In order to live, we need the support of a certain number of beliefs, which serve as foundations for our emotional and intellectual life. Without these supports, life would be impossible; it would be exactly like walking in quicksand. Inwardly as well as outwardly, we need to feel something solid beneath our feet. This is why, even if you delude yourselves now and then, it is always beneficial to believe in the good. If nothing else, this at least helps you maintain a positive disposition. But at the same time, as the years go by you must strive to become increasingly lucid and conscious by replacing vague beliefs with true knowledge. You don’t want to be as naïve at forty as you were at twenty!
